The Last Airbender Movie Fail

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 30, 2010, 11:27 PM
  • Mood: Neutral

Ladies and Gentlemen...

... it's official now: Shyamalan gave us the next Dragonball: Evolution!

TLA is so bad critics are ripping it into pieces left and right. And from the detailed summaries, the clips and all the other information I saw ever since the fail!cast was announced I say it's rightfully shredded! As of now it is holding 06% on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metascore of 23. Even people who were excited to see it beforehand were devastated after they saw the movie.

If you think that because it has a good original source Shyamalan couldn't possibly screw it up that much, fear not! HE DID!
  • He ripped the story into unrecognisable bits. If you don't know the series you couldn't possible follow the story at all.
  • To compensate for that he tortures you with exposition - TONS OF EXPOSITION! If you know anything about storytelling you should know one rule: "Show, not tell!". What Shyamalan did was "Tell, not show".
  • The writing is horrible. I kid you not. Every quote I read is cringe-worthy.
  • It doesn't help that the actors are outright bad (Noah, Nicola, Jackson) or at best decent (Dev). Then again, it could be the crappy writing and direction.
  • The characters are non-existent and/or so much OOC that it looks like a horrible fanfiction.

All I can say now is: DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!
If you are a fan of the series do not reward M. Night Shyamalan for butchering your favourite cartoon with your hard earned money.
If you haven't seen the series, watch the series instead.

But I want to support Mike and Bryan...

Mike and Bryan don't have anything to do with this movie. They had no creative influence whatsoever. If it was their movie it would have been different.

If you want to support the two and the cartoon in general:
  • Buy the DVDs - they are cheap and you have high quality entertainment!
  • Buy the Artbook - it is all sorts of awesome and totally worth its money! If you have any doubt about all the work they put into this project read it for yourself - it's amazing.

In closing...

... let me clarify:

  • I am not happy that the movie turned out to be the way it is. I would have rather had a high quality blockbuster which would reflect the awesomeness of the TV show.
  • I feel incredibly sorry for Dev Patel. While the other actors already have new projects, Dev got nothing. This is the very reason why racebending.com exists - Hollywood is not willing to give fantastic young talents like him good roles just because he's Indian. It's heartbreaking.
  • I blame all the fail on M. Night Shyamalan, Frank Marshall and Paramount who have all demonstrated an incredible amount of unprofessional stupidity thorough the whole past 19 months. And yes, Shyamalan has lost all my respect - especially with his latest interviews. Whatever benefit of the doubt I was willing to give him it's gone right now.

As a fan of the series, as someone who's creating their own fantasy world and as an admirer of cinema I cannot and will not support this movie and I ask you to skip it as well. Do not watch The Last Airbender.

Thank you!

Just for the heck of it XD

Yep, you said it. I am so incredibly disappointed. When I first heard the announcement of the film, I got so excited--I mean hot damn, the source material is excellent so it can't be that hard to make a film that's at least watchable. Stupid M.Night. I hope he'll be officially banned from moviemaking again, it's becoming more obvious to me that The Sixth Sense was a fluke, a beginner's luck. He's not made a single good film since. Why they couldn't find another director is beyond me. Uuurggh.
I think I'll just end up downloading it for the lulz...:(

The whole thing was destined to fail ever since they announced the cast. I knew they weren't interested in making a faithful adaptation at all. From then on it just went downhill. But even I didn't see it coming how bad this flick would turn out in the end. :noes:

I don't think anyone could've seen that coming! It makes me sad that he couldn't keep true enough to the series. Sigh. I really want a reboot of the series, but obviously that won't happen. At least not for many years to come, but still wishful thinking. So sad :(

Oh yes, I saw! The Legend of Korra, right? Have they released any details yet, as in who Korra is, for starters? In any case, I'm sure they'll do a good job, definitely excited.

Not as far as I know. Though I suppose this years San Diego Comic Con might be a good starting point for them to spread the news. :la:

The reactions are entirely negative. Even people who where able to find something positive about it are rather like "meh" about it. I've seen a couple of videos from fans before and after the movie.
Before: Yay! \o/
After: Boo! It sucks!
