Moonbeam13's journal:
[link]1. Who are you?My name is Sabrina, I'm 25 years old and a student currently living in Hamburg, Germany. My major is Japan Studies, my minors are Art History and currently Law. I'm planning to finish my studies somewhen in 2011 with a Magister Artium (<-- fancy Latin title, simply means "Master of Arts" - which is also pretty cool actually).
2. What is your artistic passion?I love stories and so I love basically every form of artworks that is related to stories like illustration, concept arts, character portraits, comics and whatnot. So it's probably not surprising that my artworks are usually covering that kind of stuff.
I currently prefer to work digitally - mainly because I don't have the space and money for traditional paintings. But I also still draw a lot with my pencil on good old paper. :3
3. Why did you get into art? There were several factors that came together when I was around 13.
1st) I noticed that I liked drawing stuff.
2nd) It was also around that time when I once forgot to bring my art supplies to art classes. The teacher thought it would be an appropriate punishment to copy the text of a book about one of those old dead artists. It was about Dürer and the fact that he started to draw and paint awesome stuff at a young age kept me interested enough to read through the whole text and wishing that I could do that too one day.
3rd) I was a teen, it was the 90's - of course I loved Sailor Moon! And manga/anime in general. So I started out with drawing a lot of manga styled stuff.
4. How do you inspire yourself? Most common answer: Music. Needs no explanation, I think.
Second most common answer: Art. Artworks, art books, artists, what have you.
5. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?First of all I'd like to have my fancy title by then, lol. A job to pay my bills would be nice as well.
Art-wise I'd love to study again - this time illustration. But that depends on my financial situation. Apart from that I hope I can make some real progress on my projects and perhaps even make some money from my art. But it's still a long way to go so I don't really know what will be in 5 years.
The new semester has started and I already have pile of work on my desk.

This semester I really need to work my ass of. But I hope I'll still have some time for arts left.
Just for the heck of it XD

I believe I knew most of what you wrote here already, but some were new! I wasn't aware that you got so much art inspiration from music, for instance. Do you listen to any particular kind/genre when drawing, or just whatever rocks at the moment? Just wondering, because I too listen to tons of music and get plenty of inspiration, but I kinda only listen to very specific type when "creating"
For the music - it varies a lot. I can't even tell what really triggers my creative juices. But I have of course always a couple of favourites at hand. Sometimes it's an album and sometimes it's just one song that I listen to on repeat for hours. And sometimes I just hang out at youtube and click through random music videos. lol
I see what you mean about the music, I guess it depends on the situation and mood. I too love discovering new and cool stuff on YouTube!
The thing about music is also that it links so easily to situations, places and people - real or fictional - which brings a whole new dimension into the process.
Examples:
Ginormous "At Night Under Artificial Light" - heard it all the time in Japan, so when I hear it now it heavily remembers me of the urban streets of Osaka.
Schiller "Leben" - heard it all the time while reading Lord of the Rings, so when I hear it now I automatically think of Middle Earth (it even has a track called that, lol)
I very much agree with the idea how specific music links to specific places or thoughts. That's something I use to when drawing, to put me in a particular 'trance' or mood.
Thanks for the examples! I'm gonna check them out on YouTube
